“It’s easy to articulate mechanics, but it’s much more different to say what makes a program different. The overarching thing is if you’re not a good writer, nothing else matters.”

Ernie Vargo, President and CEO, Eskenazi Health Foundation

“I always learn something from her, and pretty much any grants we’ve received, we can attribute to her, particularly in medical education.” Kathy Zoppi, Director of Academic Affairs, Community Health Network

We were hired by Community Health Network Foundation in 2008 with initial assignments to create a comprehensive case statement and identify grant opportunities. Despite being one of the largest hospital and healthcare systems in the Indianapolis area (with four hospitals and around 90 sites of care at the time), its Foundation was a small shop with basically no external grant funding. Our initial assignments formed the basis of the robust grants program that has resulted in millions of dollars in revenue, new programs for the underserved, and enhanced medical education. In addition to countless private foundation grants, our consulting and writing has led to five federal awards (from HRSA and SAMHSA).

Success Rate

Ah, the million dollar question. While we’ve secured over $50 million in grant awards since 2006 and have a variety of long-term clients, those aren’t the most meaningful indicators of our work. We place a greater value on the intangible outcomes—the actual people who are impacted by the direct service and research made possible by our collaboration.
